  John Sly

  John Sly was a Private in the First Chatham Colored Company and later in the 2nd Battalion Incorporated Militia. He signed the pay list with an 'X.' Sly was one of the four rioters who attempted to free Nelson Hackett after he was arrested in September 1841 and extradited back to the U.S. In the margins of the pay roll is a note that reads: "Deduction. Delivered to Civil Prison for Riot."

  Josiah Jones

  Born in Tennessee, Josiah Jones escaped enslavement through the Underground Railroad and crossed into Canada at the Detroit River before making his way to the British American Institute (BAI). Eventually residing on 11th Concession, Lot 17 with his two brothers Cyrus and Stephen, Jones married his neighbor Susan Warsaw. He was a farmer, was a member of the First Baptist Church, and a vocal abolitionist who urged his neighbours to use their liberty to help secure the freedom of others. During the Rebellions of 1837-38, Jones volunteered for militia service and eventually served with the 2nd Battalion Incorporated Militia as a Private. He did not sign the pay list with an 'X.'

  Cyrus Jones

  Cyrus Jones lived and worked in Chatham Township after he escaped enslavement in the 1830s . He bought property with his brothers Josiah and Stephen on lot 16, concession 10 and worked on the boats that ran along the Sydenham River and Lake St. Clair. By 1841 he was serving as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Incorporated Militia with Josiah. He did not sign the pay lists with an 'X.' Eventually Cyrus married Jane Smith and move to Chicago.
