William Levear was a Private in the First Chatham Colored Company and later in the 2nd Battalion Incorporated Militia. He signed the pay list with an 'X.' Levear was one of the four rioters who attempted to free Nelson Hackett after he was arrested in September 1841 and extradited back to the U.S. In the margins of the pay roll is a note that reads: "Deduction. Delivered to Civil Prison for Riot."
