Born in Tennessee, Josiah Jones escaped enslavement through the Underground Railroad and crossed into Canada at the Detroit River before making his way to the British American Institute (BAI). Eventually residing on 11th Concession, Lot 17 with his two brothers Cyrus and Stephen, Jones married his neighbor Susan Warsaw. He was a farmer, was a member of the First Baptist Church, and a vocal abolitionist who urged his neighbours to use their liberty to help secure the freedom of others. During the Rebellions of 1837-38, Jones volunteered for militia service and eventually served with the 2nd Battalion Incorporated Militia as a Private. He did not sign the pay list with an 'X.'
